2nd Annual Dog Day Afternoon

I am so excited to announce the 2nd Annual Dog Days Afternoon at the Denver JCC on October 10th. Last year the weather was a bit too cold, but with our summer like temperatures, I think we are all set for next Sunday.

The Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center will host a free doggie fun day at the Chotin Family Outdoor Pool. The event is open to members, staff and now neighborhood friends.

Regardless of rain, snow or shine, dogs weighing less than 30 lbs are welcome to frolic from 10 a.m.-12 noon. Those that are 31lbs or more can play at the pool from 12 noon–2 p.m. All must be neutered or spayed and be current with all vaccinations. Lisa Tanguma, a JCC fitness instructor and director of this special event concluding the pool’s open season, says humans must be at least age 10 or older to attend. People can swim with their pets and are asked to bring plenty of towels to dry both themselves and their furry best friends!

Registration is easy and fun too. Click here for details.

Glendale residents can tour the JCC’s newly renovated Sports & Fitness Center — and fill out the Dog Day Afternoon registration form while they’re at it. Call the JCC membership department, 303-316-6308, to schedule a convenient time for the tour and registration procedure. Registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 4.  Those who do not register can participate in Dog Day in the Afternoon activities by paying $25 at the event.

Also, because this event is meant to support the Denver Dumb Friends League, Every Creature Counts and the Colorado Weimaraner Rescue, participants are asked to bring one or more of the following donations:

  • 6 cans of dog food (please only bring food you would feed to your own pet)
  • 1 small bag of dry food (only food you’d feed your pet)
  • 2 gently used blankets (no holes)
  • 4 gently used towels (no holes)
  • new comb and brush
  • 3-4 chew toys or rawhide bones

If you would like to give your time, can donate a prize or have questions about Dog Day Afternoon, contact Tanguma at ltanguma@jccdenver.org.

Race for the Cure – 50,000 Participants!

This was the first year in a long time that I didn’t participate in Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, however I heard it was a a great event, as always. There were 50,000 participants this year! Even more impressive is that the Denver affiliate office has raised more than 25 million since 1993.  Last year’s race raised 2 million alone! I can’t wait to hear what the total is this year …

Denver Derby Party, a huge success

I attended the Derby Party at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday for the very first time, and it was amazing! I was told there were 2,500 tickets sold, and I believe it! More interesting is that tickets were sold out between 9am and 11am a month ago! Following are just a few photos I took of all the madness. Keep in mind that this party is the biggest Derby Party west of Kentucky.
